Summary:This research aimed to study the teaching competency and the most dominant characteristics among postgraduate students in Faculty of Education at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The sample comprised of 309 teachers working in different secondary / primary school in Johor Bahru. The competency was determined through their views using a questionnaire on teaching skills, concern for school, concern for students and concern for self. Thus, developing a comprehensive and practical model of teachers’ competence characteristics. The data was analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) Version 11.5 software. The result showed that, all teachers are competent teachers. There are significant relationship between teaching competency and gender, specializations, and; academic achievement. In respect to the outcome of the research, there were some relevant suggestions being put forth and carried out
