Summary:This study aims to identify the understanding of hearing impaired students in understanding and explaining the basic concept of matter. This study focuses on the concepts of solids, liquids, gases and changing phases of boiling, evaporation and condensation. A total of 30 hearing impaired students from Form Four and Form Five of Sekolah Menengah Pendidikan Khas Vokasional Indahpura, Kulaijaya were selected as the samples. The research instrument serves to check the respondents’ understanding by providing a selected number of objective questions as a test. Interviews are conducted as well on six teachers as part of the research instruments. Results shows that students with hearing impairment have significantly low language mastery and this has led to an alternative framework in learning the basic concepts of matter. However, the strength of these hearing impaired students in visual skills is utilized by producing a short module on the Basic Concepts of Matter.
