Summary: | The use of ketum leaves has been abused by mixing certain
ingredients in ketum decoction. The boiled water is able to have an imaginary effect like a drug. Accordingly, ketum has been declared a banned substance since January 2003. The state of Kedah emerged as the largest supplier of ketum in the country with an area of ketum cultivation exceeding 32 hectares and generating a sales value of more than RM1 million per month. The widespread ketum cultivation activities in the state increase the risk of ketum consumption among teenagers or youths. Continuous intake of ketum water can lead to drug addiction. Ketum intake is based on certain reasons. Among them are as an energy or physical strength drink, available easily and at low
prices, an alternative to drugs, recreational and social and medical purposes. Ketum leaves are in high demand from neighboring countries such as Thailand. This makes it difficult to combat the problem of smuggling of ketum leaves coupled with the absence
of an act to prevent ketum trees from being planted. Personal interviews or group discussions are appropriate for detailed information and comprehensive insights. This study has explored the practice of using ketum leaves among the community around Padang Besar, Perlis. This study has explained the reasons why youths practice ketum
water and provide input to aid professions such as social workers, counselors, officers of the Social Welfare Department (JKM) and related agencies in designing and implementing appropriate interventions and prevention programs. from entering the country. This strategy emphasizes on efforts to strengthen the enforcement measures to prevent the entry and supply of drugs by land, sea and air. In addition, aggressive enforcement efforts continue to be carried out to curb the distribution and sale of drugs in the country. |
