description The purpose of this study is to determine the competencies needed by Senior Officers of Royal Malaysia Police in Terengganu Contingent. Apart from that, study is also to compare the competencies needed by officers from different backgrounds base on placement, rank, age, tenure, gender and education. Furthermore, the study is also to determine whether there was any relationship between the current competencies of the officers and demography elements. The research instrument was prepared in the form of questionnaire based on definitions of competencies introduced by Boyatzis (1982), and Fayol (1949). The data was collected from 150 respondents of out which 109 responded. There are 12 elements of competency and 92 competency activities required to enable the senior officers of the Royal Malaysia Police in Terengganu Contingent, to discharge their duty effectively and excellently. In general, the competencies of Senior Officers of Royal Malaysia Police in Terengganu Contingent are average and high. The study also indicates that there is only a marginal difference about the level of competencies among men and women where men score slightly higher. Apart from that, there are certain areas of competencies that needed to be developed by Senior Police Officers in Contingent Terengganu namely planning skill, identifying and problem solving skill, and decision making skill. The study also shows that, the level of competencies for each respondent varied depending on their age. The level of competencies increased in accordance with age and tenure of every officer. Besides that, the study also shows there is no significant relationship between placement and gender with competencies. The would help the management of Royal Malaysia Police especially in Terengganu Contingent specifically and the Royal Malaysia Police in general to formulate the integrated and properly structured development programs for all levels of officers and men particularly designing training programs in future.
