Description
Summary:This research was done to see the relationship between involvement in cocurriculum activities with the academic achievement by the students in secondary schools. The samples were taken from form five students who sat for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) in Heng Ee Secondary School, Penang. One hundred and fifty students had been chosen at random. However, there were only one hundred (67%) students returned completed questionnaires. The research instrument for this study included one set of questionnaires and the SPM examination results. The students’ involvement in co-curriculum activities were collected based on the scores obtained from the questionnaires. The grades in SPM examinations were collected as their academic achievement. The background of the respondents were analysed by using desciptive analysis method. The relationship between involvement in co-curriculum activities with academic achievement was analysed by using correlation, and the differences between the level of involvement in co-curiculum activities with academic achievement from gender, art stream or science stream were analysed by using ANOVA analysis. The findings showed that hundred percent students involved in co-curriculum activities. There were thirteen percent with very active involvement, forty-four percent with active involvement and forty-three were inactive. Coefficient correlation between involvement in co-curriculum activities with academic achievement was 0.248. This showed a very low correlation. ANOVA analysis showed that overall there were no differences between the level of involvement in co-curiculum activities with academic achievement by gender, art stream or science stream, except that there was a difference between the very active girls’ academic achievement with in-active girls’ academic achievement. The results indicate that participation in co-curriculum activities does not affect the academic achievement of the students.
