Description
Summary:The research was conducted to determine the sources and level of stress experienced by secondary school administrators in the southern part of the West Coast of Sabah. The respondents comprised of secondary principals, senior assistants (administration, students affairs and co-curriculum) and afternoon supervisors. The study was also to find out the corellation between the level of stress at work and the demographic factor as well as organizational climate. Questionnanaires were used as the research instrument. The study focused on 41 secondary schools in the southern part of West Coast Of Sabah as the research population. Stratified random sampling was used to select 148 administrators as sample from the total population size of 185 persons. The questionnaires were designed based on the objective of the research. It was divided into three sections, that is Section A, B and C with a total of 53 questions. The consistency reliability of the research instrument was checked through a pilot test done on 30 school adminstrators from a few schools in Selangor and the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur. The Cronbach alpha coefficient test was done for the question constructed and the alpha score was 0.9330. The data collected was processed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) Windows 10 software. Discriptive statistics such as percentage, mean and standard deviation were used in the analysis. The results showed that 91.3% of respondents experienced management work stress with 6.7% experiencing high level of stress. 16,3% at the medium level whilst 67.3% experienced low level of stress. Among the factors that were significantly related to management work stress were increased workload, shortage of teachers, insufficient financial resources and school equipment as well as frequent overtime. Problems such as those related to demographic factor, management of curriculum, financial management and the relationship between the staff and the environment were found not related to management work stress. Since the level of stress experienced by administrators as found in the survey was not at a critical level, this research was usefull in providing recommendations on ways to manage work stress.
