Kajian ini bertujuan mengkaji tentang kesan perubahan politi ke atas masyarakat Orang LautJohor-Riau sehingga akhir abad ke-20. Orang Lautpernah memainkan peranan penting dalam era pembentukan politi awal kerajaan Melayu tradisional. Orang Laut ialah nadi kekuatan dan kegemilangan empayar Srivijaya sehinggakepada kerajaan Melayu Melaka dan Johor- Riau. Pendekatan kualitatif dengan reka bentuk analisisdokumen dan manuskrip telah digunakan untuk menjawab empat soalan kajian dengan memperoleh sumberutama seperti dokumen dan manuskrip yang terdapat di Arkib Negara Malaysia, The National Archivesdi Kew Garden dan British Library, London. Selain itu, dokumen dan manuskrip jugadidapati di Institute of South East Asia Studies, perpustakaan National University of Singaporedan Perpustakaan Soeman HS di Pekanbaru, Riau. Data kajian turut diperoleh daripada sumber keduayang terdapat di perpustakaan institusi pengajian tinggi di Malaysia, Singapura dan Indonesia.Analisis data dalam kajian ini berdasarkan teori hermeneutik dalam tafsiran sejarah. Dapatankajian menunjukkan bahawa perubahan politi yang berlaku telah meninggalkan kesan kepada perananOrang Laut Johor-Riau. Perpecahan yang berlaku dalam politi kerajaan Melayu pada akhir abad ke- 17telah menjejaskan hubungan timbal balik yang terjalin antara Orang Laut dengan politi kerajaanMelayu. Dapatan kajian juga menunjukkan bahawa peranan Orang Laut tidak lagi relevan dalamkonteks pertembungan peradaban yang berlaku semasa kemunculan politi era kolonial padasekitar abad ke-18 dan pembentukan politi era merdeka sehingga akhir abad ke-20. Kesimpulan kajian menunjukkan bahawa perkembangan peradaban yang berlaku telahmeminggirkan Orang Laut Johor-Riau dan diikuti pula oleh kegagalan Orang Laut Johor-Riaumelibatkan diri dalam perkembangan politik, ekonomi dan sosial dalam lingkungan wilayah dansempadan politi yang mereka diami. Implikasi kajian menunjukkan bahawa perubahan politi yangepada masyarakat yang tidak bergerak seiring denganperkembangan peradaban yang dibawa bersama perubahan tersebut. |
