their Authors’ Methodologies Based on Surah al-Baqarah” attempts to unveil the
treasure of the Abridgements of the Exegesis of al-Imam al-Tabari based on Surah alBaqarah contributed by authors such as al-Imam Abi Yahya Muhammed Ibn Sumadih,
al-Shaykh Muhammed ‘Ali al-Sabuni, Dr. Salih Rida, and Dr. Salah ‘Abdul Fattah alKhalidi. It also attempts to find out the reasons for the writing of their abridgements, and
to be acquainted with their methodologies and styles for they are the pioneer
commentators of al-Imam al-Tabari’s exegesis. This study compares the methodology of
these three authors; Abu Yahya Muhammed Ibn Sumadih al-Tujibi in his (Mukhtasar min
Tafsir al-Tabari), al-Shaykh Muhammed ‘Ali al-Sabuni and Dr. Salih Rida in his
(Mukhtasar Tafsir al-Tabari), and Dr. Salah ‘Abdul Fattah al-Khalidi in his (Tafsir alTabari Taqrib wa Tahzib) to discover the agreement and disagreement of their writings.
The author uses two approaches of study: the exploration approach in order to identify in
every one of the three abridgements in the commentary of Surah al-Baqarah and the
analytical approach in order to analyze the script (nass) of the abridgements. This study
compiles key summaries of traditionalists relating to their commentaries of Qur’anic
verses. Summaries of commentaries and opinion by al-Sābūni, Dr. Salih Rida, al-Imām
Ibn Sumadih and Dr. al-Khalidi are considered essential in comprehending the
significance of al-Imam al-Tabari’s exegesis. |
