520 | |a Humanistic Language Teaching (HLT) is a language teaching approach that emphasizes the integration of both the cognitive as well as affective dimensions of language learners in the language learning process. This integration is demonstrated by making use of and relating the learners' feelings, experiences, memories, hopes, aspirations, beliefs, values, needs and fantasies to the subject or language content, especially as part of the class exercises or activities. Due to this unconventional approach, HLT is deemed by some language practitioners as inappropriate and unsuitable to be applied to language learners' of different cultures. This study is therefore an attempt to investigate the certainty of this view by specifically looking at the effects of HLT class activities on Malay students' English language performance and the perception of these students towards the HLT activities. This study is quantitative in nature and it employs a quasi-experimental design whereby two groups of Malay students (n=34) who were taking a diploma course in a private college were involved as subjects of this investigation. A set of pre-test post-test, a set of questionnaire and a set of end-of-semester exam questions were used as instruments. The findings reveal that in terms of English performance, the Malay students from the experimental group did achieve some degree of improvement in their performance after undergoing HLT activities in the class. However, the findings are not successful in demonstrating the idea that HLT approach is better than other language teaching approaches in enhancing students' language ability. Nevertheless, in terms of students' perceptions towards HLT activities, it is found that a large majority of them actually perceived HLT activities positively. | ||
