الملخص:The main purpose of this study to investigate the concept of Mobile Learning and its usage in Malaysia and also identify the students' perceptions and needs towards using mobile phones in language learning in general. It specifically examines International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) and Islamic Science University of Malaysia (USIM) students' perceptions and needs towards Mobile Learning of the Arabic language with comparisons made between universities, genders and levels of study. The study also aims to reveal the relationship between perceptions and needs among both sets of students. A questionnaire consisting items on needs of mobile ownership that include type of access, type of operating system and mobile facilities as well as perceptions was distributed to 160 students in both universities. One of the results of the students' perceptions on the advantages of Mobile Learning of the Arabic language reached a mean of 3.70 that indicates the agreement level is slightly close. There were also significant differences between IIUM students and USIM students. Meanwhile, the results of needs show 75% of the participants use their university's wi-fi and 86.2% are smartphone users with Android with 4 out of 7 having mobile facilities. However, there are no significant differences between students from both universities. The study concludes that all students majoring in Arabic are ready to learn the language using mobile phones and this can also be applied in the curriculum regardless of students' gender and level of study.
